| Retreat Plantation - Now a part of The Sea Island Golf Course, Retreat Plantation produced the famous Sea Island Cotton, a superior quality cotton that made St. Simons famous and the plantation owners wealthy. Ruins of a slave hospital can still be seen. The present clubhouse was formerly one of the plantation buildings. Fishing Pier - Built to receive travelers from the mainland in the days of the ferry boats, the pier remains a focal point for island life. From here both local people and visitors fish. Nearby are shopping and dining. Neptune Park - Here you will find a playground, park and the Casinos. The public library is housed in the Old Casino Building as is the theater where The Island Players give performances. Public musical performances are held at the band stand. The New Casino Building holds a swimming pool (seasonal). St. Simons Visitor’s - This is the Island’s information and welcome center. Detailed information about St. Simons activities and facilities is available here. 638-9014 Lighthouse Museum - Built in 1872 as the lightkeeper’s home, the fine old brick house now holds the museum of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. One fee admits visitors to both the Museum and Lighthouse. Adults $4; Children 6-11 $2. Hours: 10 - 5, Monday - Saturday; 1:30 - 5, Sunday; (Hours subject to change) 638-4666 Glynn Art Association - Gallery and gift shop featuring local artists. Center provides instructions in many of the arts disciplines. Free and open to the public from 9 to 5 Tuesday-Friday; 10 to 4 Saturday; closed Sunday & Monday. 638-8770 St. Simons Beach (Massengale Park) - Picnic facilities, parking and bathing facilities are available with several miles of fine sand beaches that run south and north of the Coast Guard Station. Bloody Marsh Battle Site - In 1742 a decisive battle was fought here between English and Spanish forces. Although greatly outnumbered, the British ambushed a Spanish contingent headed for an attack on Fort Frederica. This battle proved to be the turning point in the Spanish influence in Georgia. Sea Island - Howard E. Coffin conceived of the idea of Sea Island being developed as a resort/residential community that would attract a very special clientele. Built in the 1920’s, Sea Island continues to draw those who value gracious living. Christ Church, Frederica - The present church was built in 1884 by Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr. as a memorial to his first wife, Ellen. Many of the island’s first inhabitants are buried there. Fort Frederica - Built in 1736 by General Oglethorpe as an outpost and a defense of Savannah. It is now a National Monument. Open daily, films are shown every half-hour year round. Admission fee. 638-3639 Wesley Memorial - This Celtic cross and surrounding gardens memorialize Reverends John and Charles Wesley who accompanied Oglethorpe to Georgia as Anglican priests. After their return to England they began the movement that led to the establishing of the Methodist Church. Epworth-By-The-Sea - Methodist conference center built on the site of the Hamilton Plantation, one of the largest and best known of the antebellum plantations. The center houses a museum that contains items from plantation days as well as artifacts from the time the site was a prosperous lumber mill. The focus of the museum is the history of the South Georgia United Methodist Conference. Admission is free. 638-4050 Gascoigne Bluff - Live oak timbers cut in this vicinity in 1794 were used in building “Old Ironsides,” the U. S. Constitution. Jekyll Island Museum - The largest restoration project in the Southeast, includes the 240 acre Jekyll Island Club Historic District. More than 25 buildings, many open for touring. Open 9-5 daily. Tour information: 635-2762 Convention Center - Located on the beach, the center houses meeting rooms for any size gatherings. The Beach Deck provides space for festivals and outdoor concerts and events. 635-3400 Millionaires Golf Course - Three 18-hole courses are included in this popular golf complex. The Oceanside Nine is the original course played by the millionaire members of the Jekyll Island Club. Horton House Ruins - Built in 1746, this house replaced the one burned by retreating Spaniards in 1742. Summer Waves - Water park with over a million gallons of water used for four water slides, a wave pool, a children’s pool and the Slow Motion Ocean. Seas |
